76-Year-Old Senator to Step Down at End of Term
Manchin has been a key swing vote in the evenly divided Senate
Senator Joe Manchin III (D-WV), a conservative Democrat who has been a key swing vote in the evenly divided Senate, has announced that he will retire at the end of his term.
Manchin, 76, was first elected to the Senate in 2010 to fill the seat left vacant by the late Senator Robert C. Byrd.
In a statement, Manchin said that he had made the "difficult decision" to retire after "much thought and prayer." He said that he was "proud" of what he had accomplished in the Senate, but that he felt it was time to pass the torch to a new generation of leaders.
