New Antarctic Ice Melt Patterns Revealed

By Our Staff Reporter

March 15, 2023

Antarctica's Dotson Ice Shelf is melting at a rate of 100 meters per year. That's 10 times faster than the average rate for the rest of the continent.

The discovery was made using high-resolution maps of the underside of the ice shelf. The maps showed that the melting is not evenly distributed. Instead, it is concentrated in certain areas, such as the edges of the ice shelf and the areas near the surface.

The researchers believe that the melting is being caused by warm ocean water that is seeping up from below. This water is melting the ice from the bottom up.

The findings are important because they provide new insights into how Antarctica is melting. This information can be used to improve climate models and predict future sea level rise.
