Taiwan's Olympic Journey: Competing Under Different Banners
China's Pressure on Taiwan
Taiwan, officially known as the Republic of China, faces pressure from China, which claims it as its own territory. This has led to diplomatic and political tensions, including the use of different flags and names in international sporting events.
Competing as "Chinese Taipei"
Since 1984, Taiwan has competed in the Olympics under the name "Chinese Taipei." This was a compromise reached after a dispute with China, which objected to Taiwan using its official name or flag.
The "Plum Blossom Banner"
At the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, Taiwan competed under the "Plum Blossom Banner." This white flag features a small white sun on a blue circle, similar to Taiwan's national flag.
Gold Medal Victory
In a significant achievement, weightlifter Kuo Hsing-chun won Taiwan's first gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics. However, she was unable to wear the Taiwanese flag on the podium due to China's objections.
Beijing Winter Olympics 2022
As the Beijing Winter Olympics approach in February 2022, a small number of Taiwanese athletes will participate under the "Chinese Taipei" banner. They will compete in sports such as speed skating, ice hockey, and figure skating.
