Juneteenth: A Triumphant Journey to Freedom

Observance, Recognition, and Legacy

A Proclamation on Juneteenth Day of Observance 2023

Juneteenth, a day steeped in historical significance, marks the triumph of freedom and the abolition of slavery in the United States. This year, as the nation prepares to commemorate the holiday on June 19th, we reflect on its profound impact and the ongoing journey towards equality and justice for all.

A Proud Legacy

In 1865, over two years after the Emancipation Proclamation, the news of emancipation finally reached enslaved people in Texas. June 19th, known as Juneteenth, became a day of celebration and liberation for African Americans throughout the country.

National Significance

In recent years, Juneteenth has gained widespread recognition. In 2021, it became a national holiday, recognizing its historical importance and the ongoing struggle for civil rights. This year, 28 states will legally recognize Juneteenth as a public holiday, further solidifying its place in American history.

A Celebration of Freedom

Juneteenth is a day for remembrance, reflection, and celebration. It is a time to honor the sacrifices of those who fought for freedom, to celebrate the progress we have made as a nation, and to recommit ourselves to the ideals of justice and equality.
