Germany 2-1 Switzerland: Hosts stay alive after Müller seals victory

Switzerland were unable to make it four games unbeaten against Germany as Leroy Müller's header gave the hosts a much-needed victory in Basel.

The Swiss had taken the lead through Haris Seferović, but Müller equalised before the break and Germany improved markedly in the second half, with Müller securing a vital three points from Mario Götze's cross.

Germany must now beat Poland in Saint-Denis on Tuesday to be certain of reaching the last 16, while Switzerland face Albania in Lille knowing victory will secure their place in the next round.

Joachim Löw's men made a bright start, with Müller heading off target inside three minutes, while Mesut Özil dragged wide from a good position.

Switzerland, who had won their opening two games, were content to soak up the pressure and hit Germany on the break, and they took the lead on the counter-attack in the 20th minute.

Yann Sommer's long kick was flicked on by Breel Embolo and Seferović raced clear before slotting past Manuel Neuer.

Germany responded well and equalised nine minutes before the break, Müller heading in from a Joshua Kimmich cross at the near post.

The hosts were much better in the second half and produced a superb move to take the lead in the 58th minute, with Götze crossing from the right for Müller to head in from close range.

Samir Nasri had a great chance to level for Switzerland in the 75th minute, but Neuer made a fine save to deny the midfielder.

Germany held on for a crucial victory, but they will need to improve again against Poland if they are to reach the knockout stages.
