Southwest Airlines Flight 1380 Lands Safely After Engine Failure
144 Passengers and 5 Crew Members Safe
Mid-Air Terror Before Emergency Landing
Southwest Airlines Flight 1380, a Boeing 737-700, experienced a contained engine failure in the left CFM International CFM56 engine shortly after takeoff from New York's LaGuardia Airport on Tuesday morning. Despite the terrifying mid-air incident, the flight landed safely at Philadelphia International Airport about 20 minutes later.
The incident occurred about 20 minutes into the journey from New York to Dallas when the engine exploded, sending shrapnel through a window and causing a rapid loss of altitude. The plane depressurized, creating chaos and terror for the 144 passengers and five crew members on board.
One passenger, identified as Jennifer Riordan, was killed in the incident. Seven others were injured.
The former Naval aviator and pilot of the plane, Tammie Jo Shults, was praised for her heroic actions in landing the plane safely.
